Verdict.

How much caffeine is in each pre-workout?

150mg to 200mg across four of the best sellers, which is a smaller spread than anyone expects. The number that actually varies is the scoop, and one of these doubles to 400mg.

Short answer: 150mg to 200mg per stated serving, and the spread is tiny. Four of the biggest sellers scanned off their own panels: Gorilla Mode and ABE at 200mg, Gold Standard at 175mg, C4 at 150mg. The variable that actually matters is the serving size, because one of them sells two scoops and that is 400mg.

Caffeine is the ingredient everybody compares pre-workouts on, and it is close to the least informative number on any of these labels.

The four, per the serving each label states

ProductCaffeineServing
Gorilla Mode200mg1 scoop
ABE Ultimate200mg1 scoop (12.5g)
ON Gold Standard175mg11g
C4 Original150mg1 scoop

A 50mg spread across the whole set. That is less than the difference between a weak and a strong cup of coffee, and it is nothing like the difference these products claim over each other.

For reference, both EFSA and the FDA use 400mg a day as the figure for healthy adults. Every one of these is well under half of that in one serving.

The scoop is the number that varies

This is where a real difference hides.

Gorilla Mode states one scoop on its panel but sells two on the tub. At two scoops the caffeine is 400mg, which is a full day's recommended maximum in a single drink, before any coffee you had that morning.

Nothing about that is hidden or illegal. The panel is accurate at the serving it states. It just means "200mg" and "what you are about to drink" are different numbers for that product and identical for the other three.

What actually separates these products

Not caffeine. Citrulline.

Effective citrulline across three of them runs 5000mg, 2700mg and 750mg, a sevenfold spread on the ingredient the entire category is built around, and C4 carries none at all. That is the comparison worth making and it is invisible on the front of every tub.

The number nobody adds up

Your pre-workout is not your only caffeine. A coffee before the gym is 80mg to 120mg. An energy drink is 80mg to 160mg. A pre-workout at 200mg on top of both puts you near the daily figure by lunchtime.

Caffeine also has a half-life of roughly five hours, so an afternoon session is still working at bedtime. Our caffeine calculator totals a whole day across coffee, cans and scoops.

What to do

  1. Stop comparing pre-workouts on caffeine. The spread is 50mg. Compare them on citrulline, which spreads sevenfold.
  2. Check the serving, not the milligrams. Two scoops of a 200mg product is 400mg, and that is a different product.
  3. Add the day, not the scoop. The ceiling is daily, and coffee counts.

Verdict reads the label, not the reputation. Photograph the supplement facts panel and it pulls every dose, compares each against the amounts used in published research, and adds up your whole stack. It reports the arithmetic. It does not tell you what to take.
